Bidar Fort: It is included in the ‘tentative List’ of World Heritage Sites under ‘Monuments and Forts of the Deccan’ by UNESCO.

Location: On the edge of Bidar plateau in North Karnataka.

Construction: By Sultan Ahmed Shah I like an irregular rhombus on the plateau’s edge.

Historical Record: Persian scholar Firishta mentioned it in ‘Tarikh-i-Firishta’ and stated that the Taj Mahal was built there.

Architecture: Palaces like Gagan Mahal, Rangin Mahal, Takht mahal and Solah Khamba mosque along with 7 gates made the fort look magnificent.

Capture: Tughlaq dynasty’s Prince Ulugh Khan captured it from Katatiyas and later became Sultan Md. Bin Tughlaq.

Bahmani Rule: In 1347, after the formation of Bahmani Sultanate, Ahmed Shah I named Bidar his capital city and rebuilt the old fort.

Later rulers: Bijapur Sultanate, Mughals during Aurangzeb, and Nizams later captured the fort.
