Extinct birds come back to life after
300 years
The northern bald ibis has returned to Europe after being absent for over 300 years.
These birds, known for their glossy plumage and curved beaks, once inhabited three continents.
In ancient cultures, the ibis held symbolic importance, with a hieroglyph representing "spirit."
By the late 20th century, only 59 breeding pairs remained, all in Morocco.
Human activities like hunting and pesticide use pushed the species toward extinction.
Conservation efforts in Morocco's Souss-Massa National Park helped the population recover.
The population now exceeds 500 in the wild, leading to a change in status from "critically endangered" to "endangered."
A reintroduction program in Spain began in 2004, successfully returning the species to southern Europe.
In Austria and Germany, biologist Johannes Fritz used ultralight aircraft to teach captive birds their migratory routes.
Despite successes, challenges like poaching, pesticides, and climate change continue to threaten the northern bald ibis.
