About the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS):
- BBPS was conceptualised by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) & driven by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to act as a one–stop ecosystem for all recurring bills and providing an interoperable, accessible and recurring payment service across India.
- It has multiple modes of payment & provides safe and secure transactions.
- NPCI is responsible for setting business standards, rules and procedures for technical and business requirements for all the participants of BBPS.
- BBPS has also been integrated with the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), India’s instant payment system, for quick payments.
Significance of BBPS for NRIs:
- NRIs can transfer money to their families and make their bill payments – electricity, gas, water, loan repayments, etc.
- BBPS facility is available to NRIs living in Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
