Kerala Tourism initiated a project to enhance amenities around the historic Edakkal Caves.
About Edakkal Caves:
- The Edakkal Caves, known for rock art from prehistoric times, are located in Wayanad, Kerala.
- They were discovered by Fred Fawcett in 1890.
- They are situated on Ambukuthi hills and feature Neolithic-era pictorial writings dating back to at least 6,000 BCE.
- They display human, and animal figures, symbols, & letters.
- They are not technically caves but a cleft or rock shelter.
- The petroglyphs inside the cave are of at least three types, with the oldest possibly dating back over 8,000 years.
- There are potential links between the drawings in the caves and the Indus Valley civilization.
