India sought to reinforces its commitment to the Global South by participating in the ‘G77 Plus China’ summit, to be held in Cuba.
About G77
- The group was founded in 1964, by 77 non-aligned nations in the “Joint Declaration of the Seventy-Seven Countries” issued at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
- It is the largest intergovernmental group of developing nations (134 members) that focuses on inequality, sustainable development and poverty eradication.
- It creates an enhanced joint negotiating capacity in the United Nations.
- The South Summit is the supreme decision-making body of the Group of 77.
- Cuba held its chairmanship for 2023, succeeding Pakistan.
What is G77 Plus China?
- It’s called G77 Plus China because while China works closely with the group, but it does not officially consider itself a full member.
