Hindi Diwas, or Hindi Day, is celebrated on 14th September to commemorate the Constituent Assembly of India making Hindi the official language of the Union government.

India’s official language:
Munshi-Ayyangar formula:
- It recommended Hindi in Devanagari Script to be the Official Language in India along with English for 15 years.
Article 343 of the Constitution:
- The official language of the Union shall be Hindi in Devanagari script.
- The form of numerals to be used for the official purposes of the Union shall be the international form of Indian numerals.
- Regardless of anything in clause (1), for 15 years from the commencement of the Constitution, the English language shall continue to be used for all the official purposes of the Union for which it was being used immediately before such commencement.
Official Languages Act, 1963:
- After the completion of 15 years, protests broke out over the fear of imposition of Hindi in large parts of non-Hindi-speaking India, particularly in Tamil Nadu.
- The centre has passed the Official Languages Act which stated that English would continue to be upheld as an official language along with Hindi.
About the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution:
- Part XVII of the Indian constitution deals with the eight schedule which lists the official languages of India in Articles 343 to 351, including a total of 22 languages.
- 14 were originally included in the constitution, Sindhi was included as the 15th language by 21st Constitutional Amendment Act, 1967.
- In the 71st Amendment Act, 1992, Konkani, Manipuri and Nepali languages were added in the Eight Schedule.
- Bodo, Dogri, Maithili and Santali were added by the 92nd Amendment Act of 2003.
