Details of the project:

  • This project includes a 40 MW / 120 MWh BESS coupled with solar photovoltaic (PV) plant at Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh.
    • Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are devices that enable energy from renewables, like solar and wind, to be stored and released when needed.
  • The installed capacity is 152.325 MWh (megawatt hour), with dispatchable capacity of 100 MW AC solar power.
  • It would receive support from World Bank, Clean Technology Fund under Innovation in Solar Power & Hybrid Technologies Project, SECI’s internal resources, and domestic loans.
  • Tata Power Solar Systems is the EPC (Engineering, procurement, and construction) agency and 10-year operation and maintenance support provider.
  • Solar power would be purchased by Chhattisgarh State Power Distribution Co. Ltd (CSPDCL) for energy demand during peak hours through green electrons.
    • Green electrons are electrons made using renewable resources like wind or sun, and used to create green molecules.

Key Features:

  • It integrates advanced Technology for utilization of solar panels, battery storage and bifacial modules for increased electricity generation.
  • About 451 acres of previously unused land would be used as a sustainable approach to energy project development.
  • Efficient evacuation of power through a 132 kV double-circuit double-string transmission line and integration with existing power grid would be done
  • Long-term power purchase agreement with state electricity distribution company for financial sustainability.
  • The project utilized battery storage for storing solar energy and store for later use during hours of peak demand in the evening, for meeting the electricity demand in the state.
  • The project has deployed bifacial modules, which reflect the light from the ground and generate more electricity than monofacial modules.

About Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd (SECI):

  • It is a Central Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), set up in 2011.
  • It aims to facilitate the implementation of National Solar Mission (NSM).
  • The vision is to build ‘Green India’ through harnessing abundant solar radiation and to achieve energy security for the country.
  • It is the only CPSU dedicated to the renewable energy sector, and will be expanded as Renewable Energy Corporation of India Ltd (RECI).
  • SECI is responsible for implementation of VGF schemes for large-scale grid-connected projects under NSM, solar park scheme and grid-connected solar rooftop scheme, etc.
  • Many specialized schemes under defence, solar canals, and Indo-Pak border schemes are also implemented.
