PAROS Treaty

BRICS Ministers recently emphasized the necessity to discuss a legal multilateral instrument on the PAROS (Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space) Treaty.

About PAROS Treaty:

• The PAROS Treaty was first introduced in 2008 as a draft treaty at the Conference on Disarmament.
• Objectives:
  • Prevent the placement of weapons in outer space.
  • Prohibit the installation of weapons on celestial bodies.
  • Ensure no state uses force against objects in outer space.
• Relevance to Existing Treaties:
  • The PAROS Treaty aims to complement the 1967 Outer Space Treaty.
  • It reinforces stipulations against the militarization of outer space.
