  • The red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) or fire ant or RIFA, is a species of ant native to South America.
  • They have been accidentally introduced in Australia, New Zealand, several Asian and Caribbean countries, Europe, and the United States.
  • It is polymorphic, as workers appear in different shapes and sizes.
  • Its colors are red and somewhat yellowish with a brown or black gaster, but males are completely black.
  • Found in rainforests, disturbed areas, deserts, grasslands, alongside roads and buildings, and in electrical equipment.
  • It is one of the most invasive species on the earth and the fifth most expensive to combat.

A study has recently found that red fire ants have invaded Europe, 88 nests of the red ants spread over five acres near the Italian city of Syracuse have been found.
