The Global Fund recently announced a deal with generic pharmaceutical manufacturers to slash the price of an HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) drug.

About The Global Fund:
- The Global Fund to Fight Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), Tuberculosis and Malaria is an international financing and partnership organization to end the epidemics of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria through investment in additional resources.
- It aims to support attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations.
About the deal with generic pharmaceutical manufacturers:
- The agreement would make it possible to provide the advanced pill known as TLD for under $45 per person per year.
- This improved pricing will allow governments in resource-limited settings to expand access to critical HIV services.
About TLD:
- It is a fixed-dose combination antiretroviral medication used to treat HIV/AIDS.
- The three-in-one pill bands together the drugs tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, lamivudine and dolutegravir.
- The World Health Organization has recommended it as the preferred first-line HIV treatment for adults and adolescents as it rapidly suppresses the virus that causes AIDS, has fewer side effects and is easy to take.
