Shinku-La tunnel project?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated the Shinku-La tunnel construction via a remote 'first blast' from Drass, Ladakh.

Initially approved in 2021, the project received final clearance from the Union Cabinet, led by PM Modi, in 2023.

Upon completion, the Shinku-La tunnel will surpass the Atal Tunnel as the highest in the world.

Operated by the Border Roads Organisation, this tunnel is key to a new highway linking Himachal Pradesh with Ladakh.

Designed to be the safest and shortest all-weather road to Leh, it avoids multiple mountain passes unlike other routes.

Crucial for military logistics, the tunnel provides year-round access, enhancing defense capabilities and regional safety.

The 4.1 km tunnel, once completed, will be the longest high-altitude highway tunnel in the world.

With a budget of Rs 1,681 crore, the tunnel incorporates advanced safety systems like SCADA and mechanical ventilation.

Construction will span at least two years, featuring cross-passages every 500 meters for enhanced safety.

Leh can also be reached via the Manali-Atal Tunnel-Sarchu-Leh route or the Srinagar-Zojila-Kargil-Leh route.
