This is India’s oldest church and birthplace of Christianity

St Thomas Church in Palayur is considered the oldest church in India and a pivotal site for the birth of Christianity in the country..

Founded by St Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, around 52 AD, it is one of the seven churches he established.

The church features a unique architectural style that blends Hindu ornamentation with a Persian plan, reflecting a fusion of cultural influences.

The entrance of the church resembles a mandapa, a typical feature in Hindu temples, highlighting its integrative architectural style.

According to legend, St Thomas arrived in Palayur by boat from Muziris, using the backwaters, to preach Christianity to the local Jewish and Brahmin communities.

A key moment in the church's history involves St Thomas performing a miracle by making water thrown into the air not fall back, convincing the local Brahmins of his divine message.

This miraculous event led to the conversion of many locals and the establishment of the first baptism pond in India, known as Thaliyakulam.

In the 17th century, the church underwent significant renovations while maintaining its original sanctity, spearheaded by Italian missionary Giacomo Fenicio.

A new church structure was built around the old teakwood church, which was later agreed to be demolished by the local community to preserve the new structure.

The church still houses the original altar consecrated by St. Thomas, adding to its historical and religious significance.
