What is

 International Solar Alliance (ISA)?

Purpose of ISA:

India was re-elected as ISA President (2024-2026) alongside France as Co-President, following elections at the seventh ISA General Assembly in New Delhi.

India's Leadership:

Proposed by PM Modi in 2015 and launched at COP21, ISA initially focused on tropical nations but now includes all UN member countries.

Founding

100+ countries signed, 90+ ratified; countries outside the Tropics may join without voting rights.

Global Membership:

ISA envisions “making the sun brighter” for all, aiming for $1,000 billion in solar investments and clean energy for 1 billion people by 2030.

Vision and Mission:

Operates nine solar initiatives, covering agriculture, mini grids, rooftops, e-mobility, solar parks, heating, cooling, PV batteries, and green hydrogen.

Programs:

Provides policy advocacy, business model support, financial access, and solar training for members.

Support to Members:

Led by the Assembly, Standing Committee, and Regional Committees for high-level strategic decisions.

Governance:

Represent Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America-Caribbean, and Europe-Others, supporting regional decision-making.

Regional Committees:

Prioritizes support for Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to reduce carbon emissions and enhance energy access.
