What is Rabdentse?

Why did Gurkha army destroyed it?

Rabdentse was the second capital of the erstwhile Kingdom of Sikkim from 1670 to 1814.

The 2nd Chogyal, Tensung Namgyal, established Rabdentse, moving the capital from Yuksom.

Tenzing Namgyal, a weak ruler, saw Nepal appropriating most of Sikkim, leading to his escape to Lhasa.

In 1793, Tshudpud Namgyal reclaimed the throne with China's help but shifted the capital to Tumlong.

The Nepalese and Bhutanese repeatedly attacked Rabdentse, leaving it in ruins.

Today, Rabdentse is ruined and located near upper Pelling. Visitors can see the Kanchendzong hill ranges from Rabdentse.

The northern wing of the palace was the royal family's residence, with an open quadrangle for prayers.

The palace ruins include three well-preserved chortens and the 'Dab Lhagang.'

Rabdentse has been declared a heritage monument by the Archaeological Survey of India.
