Who destroyed Vikramashila, a Buddhist monastery?

Vikramashila was a famous Buddhist monastery in Bihar, established in the late 8th or early 9th century by Dharmapala, the second ruler of the Pala Empire.

During the Pala Empire, several monasteries flourished in Bengal and Magadha.

Vikramashila was part of five great Mahaviharas along with Nalanda, Odantapura, Jagaddala, and Somapura. These monasteries formed a network and were supervised by the state.

Vikramashila was one of the largest Buddhist universities with over 100 teachers and more than 1,000 students.

Subjects taught included grammar, philosophy, metaphysics, and Buddhist tantra.

Atisha Dipankara, a prominent scholar, founded the Sarma traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.

Vikramashila flourished for about 400 years before being destroyed around 1193 by Bakhtiyar Khilji.

Vikramashila is now a significant tourism site, though relatively unknown outside Bihar.
