The Department of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR and CE) has recently appointed five women ‘odhuvars’ in the temples under their management, in Tamil Nadu.
About Odhuvars:
- Odhuvars sing devotional hymns and songs in temples but do not enter the sanctum sanctorum (innermost sanctuary of temples).
- They are not the priests in the temple.
- They completed three years of training in different temples and mutts.
- A total of 10 women Odhuvars have been appointed in various temples of TN.
