Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the 13th Khelo India Youth Games in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
About Khelo India:
- Khelo India was proposed by the government of India in 2017 to revive India’s sporting culture by engaging with children at the grassroots level.
- Implemented under this initiative, the Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG), the Khelo India University Games (KIUG), and the Khelo India Winter Games annually host national sports competitions.
- Youngsters, representing states and universities, showcase their skills, competing for medals.
- The initiative began with the Khelo India School Games in 2018.
- Every year best 1,000 kids will be given an annual scholarship of ₹5 lakh (US$6,300) for 8 years to prepare them for the international sporting events.
About 13th Khelo India Youth Games:
- The Games will be held across four cities in Tamil Nadu – Chennai, Madurai, Trichy, and Coimbatore in January 2024.
- The mascot for the games is Veera Mangai. Rani Velu Nachiya, symbolizing the valour and spirit of Indian women, with the logo featuring the figure of poet Thiruvalluvar.
- Rani Velu Nachiya was an Indian queen who waged a war against British colonial rule.
