About Bisphenol A (BPA):

  • BPA is a chemical primarily used in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins.
    • Polycarbonate plastics are utilized for making durable items such as baby bottles, reusable water bottles, food containers, pitchers, tableware, and other storage containers.
    • Epoxy resins are employed to coat the inside of metal products including food cans and bottle tops, as well as water supply pipes. They prevent the can material from corroding or reacting with the food.

Health and Environmental Concerns:

  • Small amounts of BPA can remain in products after manufacturing and may be released into food and beverages, particularly when foods or liquids are stored or heated in these containers.
  • The primary sources of BPA exposure are canned foods and beverages stored or heated in polycarbonate containers and epoxy-lined cans.

Effects on Human Health:

  • Exposure to BPA can affect the brain and prostate gland of fetuses, infants, and children.
  • There are differing opinions among scientists and government agencies regarding the safety of BPA levels found in consumer products. Recent studies have explored potential associations between BPA exposure and several health effects:
    • Some studies have reported links between elevated BPA exposure and health issues such as diabetes and heart disease, although other studies have found no significant effects.
