A case was registered against an alleged Deepfake video of the Union Home Minister in Maharashtra.
What are Deepfakes?
- Deepfakes are synthetic media created using AI and deep learning techniques, mimicking real people doing things they never did.
- The term combines “deep learning” (a subset of machine learning involving neural networks with multiple layers) and “fake.”
How Deepfakes Work?
- Utilize Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) which include two critical components:
- Generator: Creates initial fake digital content, aiming to closely mimic the target’s appearance, voice, or behaviour.
- Discriminator: Analyzes the generated content to determine its authenticity.
- This process involves a continuous feedback loop where the discriminator’s feedback helps improve the fake content progressively.
Applications of Deepfakes:
- Used for natural and accurate dubbing in movies and TV shows.
- Employed in training simulations across various fields such as medicine and aviation to enhance professional skills and decision-making.
