Researchers have developed a new mRNA cancer vaccine to retrain the body’s immune system to attack and potentially treat Brain Cancer (glioblastoma).
About Glioblastoma:
- Glioblastoma is the most aggressive and common form of primary brain tumor in adults.
- It originates in the brain itself, specifically in the star-shaped cells known as astrocytes.
Characteristics of Glioblastoma
- Highly malignant due to its ability to reproduce its cells rapidly.
- Known for forming its own blood vessels to maintain growth (angiogenesis).
- Difficult to treat because of its invasive nature and rapid spread within brain tissue.
Symptoms
- Symptoms vary depending on the tumor’s location but may include headaches, nausea, seizures, and cognitive or personality changes.
Diagnosis
- Typically diagnosed through imaging tests such as MRI and CT scans.
- Confirmation is done via biopsy, where a sample of the tumor is examined under a microscope.
Treatment Options
- Standard treatment involves a combination of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.
- Surgery aims to remove as much of the tumor as possible.
Radiation and chemotherapy help destroy remaining cancer cells and control growth.
