The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has recently noted that the floodplain of the Ganga in Kanpur district, Uttar Pradesh, is being illegally encroached upon. This is a clear violation of its 2017 order.
NGT’s 2017 Judgment:
- In 2017, the NGT designated a 100-metre area from the edge of the Ganga between Haridwar and Unnao as a “No Development Zone” and “No Construction or Regulatory Zone.” This action was taken to prevent encroachment and reduce pollution in the river.
About Floodplain Zoning:
- Floodplain zoning serves as an effective non-structural strategy for managing floods.
- It involves demarcating zones likely to be affected by floods of varying magnitudes and frequencies.
- This zoning also dictates the types of permissible developments within these zones to minimize damage caused by floods.
