Discovery about black hole using AstroSat

black hole

AstroSat recently helped in the discovery of irregular emission of high-energy X-ray photons from a Black Hole X-Ray Binary (BH-XRB) system.

About AstroSat:

  • AstroSat is India’s first dedicated multi-wavelength space observatory.
  • It aims to observe the universe in different wavelengths, such as ultraviolet, optical, and X-ray.
  • It was launched in 2015.

Key Highlights of the study:

  • In black hole X-ray binary (BH-XRB) systems, the black hole pulls matter from its tidally deformed companion, leading to the formation of a luminous accretion disk.
  • Matter in the accretion disk becomes extremely hot, emitting high-energy X-rays.
  • These high-energy X-rays serve as cosmic messengers, helping indirectly detect black holes shrouded in darkness.
  • BH-XRBs provide insights into accretion dynamics around compact objects and offer opportunities to study fundamental physical mechanisms in extreme environments.
