A Red panda was recently spotted in Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary, Arunachal Pradesh.
About the Red panda:
- The Red Panda is a small arboreal mammal native to the high-altitude forests of the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China.
- It is found in India (Sikkim, West Bengal, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh), Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, and China.
- Its habitat includes the temperate forest of the Himalayas, mixed deciduous and coniferous forests with dense bamboo cover.
- Though primarily herbivorous with bamboo as its main diet, it occasionally feeds on insects or small animals.
- Key protected areas include Khangchendzonga & Singalila National Park, Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary, Namdapha National Park, and Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary.
- Its conservation status is listed as Endangered by the IUCN, placed in Appendix I of CITES, and protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act.
