India became third largest solar power generator in 2023 surpassing Japan as per Global Electricity Review (GER) 2024.

Global Findings:

• Renewable energy generated about 30% of global electricity in 2023.
• Solar energy accounted for approximately 5.5% of global electricity, continuing as the world’s fastest-growing electricity source for the 19th consecutive year.

India-Specific Findings:

• India overtook Japan to become the 3rd largest solar power generator in 2023.
• It experienced the 4th largest increase in solar generation globally, after China, the US, and Brazil.
• Solar energy contributed 5.8% to India’s electricity generation in 2023.
