The Secretary General of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) recently discussed the status of regional cooperation in South Asia with India.
About the SAARC:
- SAARC aims to promote the welfare and accelerate economic growth, social progress, and cultural development in South Asia and consists of 8 member states: India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
- The association was established in 1985 with the SAARC Charter signed in Dhaka, and its secretariat is located in Kathmandu.
- Decision-making within SAARC occurs through unanimity, and bilateral and contentious issues are excluded from its deliberations.
