Assam Environment and Forest Department has informed the National Green Tribunal of schools functioning indulging in non-forest activities inside the Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary in violation of the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980.
About Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary:
- It is a protected area located in the state of Assam.
- It is located along the foothills of the Great Himalayan Range.
- It was declared as a sanctuary in 1998.
- It is an Important Bird Area recognized by Birdlife International.
- Four rivers flow through the sanctuary: Gabharu, Gelgeli, Sonai and Rupai.
- It forms Sonitpur Kameng Elephant Reserve with Nameri National Park.
- Flora:
- Mammals: Tiger, lesser cats, elephant, gaur, wild boar, pygmy hog, swamp deer and barking deer.
- Birds: White-winged wood duck, hornbill, pelican, and various migratory birds.
- Reptiles: python, Russell’s viper.
- Fauna: Tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen and moist deciduous forests.
