The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India FSSAI directives on fruit juice were issued for Food Business Operators (FBOs) to stop claiming ‘100% fruit juice’ on labels and advertisements.
About the directives:
- This directive is issued because, according to the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulation-2018, companies cannot claim 100% fruit juice for reconstituted juices since they are primarily composed of water.
Key highlights of the directive:
- Products must be labelled according to the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020.
- The term “reconstituted” must appear next to the juice name in the ingredient list.
- Juices containing more than 15 grams/kg of sugar must be labeled as ‘Sweet juice’.
