The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) recently issued an advisory about the unauthorized use of liquid nitrogen in food products.
About Liquid Nitrogen:
- This substance, a nitrogen in liquid state, is produced through the distillation of liquid air.
- Under the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulation, 2011, it is classified as a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) additive, permitted only in dairy-based ice cream desserts for contact-freezing and cooling.
- However, it poses risks such as cold burns, frostbite, asphyxiation, and damage to internal organs.
