A rare butterfly species, Neptis philyra, was recently discovered in Tale Valley Wildlife Sanctuary.
About Neptis Philyra:
- Neptis philyra, also known as the long-streak sailor, is a rare butterfly species.
- The butterfly’s wings are serrated with colours rich brownish-black on the upper side and yellow-brown on the underside.
- It features distinctive white cell streak markings forming a “hockey stick” pattern on the forewing.
- The Neptis philyra is a part of the Nymphalidae family.
- It is native to various regions of East Asia, including eastern Siberia, Korea, Japan, central and southwest China.
- Preferred habitats include evergreen forests, riverine vegetation, and rocky streams.
About Tale Wildlife Sanctuary:
- Also known as Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, this protected area was established in 1995.
- It is located in Arunachal Pradesh, India, encompassing part of the Ziro Valley.
- The sanctuary lies within the Boreal Zone and features subtropical and temperate broadleaved and conifer forests.
- It is a major drainage area for the Subansiri River, a tributary of the Brahmaputra River.
- Fauna includes diverse species such as the clouded leopard, Malayan giant squirrel, Indian muntjac, barking deer, and Asian palm civet.
- Avifauna in the sanctuary includes the black eagle, collared owlet, golden-breasted fulvetta, scarlet minivet, verditer flycatcher, and Mrs. Gould’s sunbird.
