About Veterinary Council of India (VCI):
- The Veterinary Council of India is a statutory body under the Indian Veterinary Council Act, 1984.
- It has been functional under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying since 1984.
- It is funded through 100% Grants-in-Aid from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
Structure:
- The council comprises 27 members in total, including 14 nominated members, 11 elected members (elected every 3 years), and 2 ex officio members.
Objectives:
- The VCI maintains the Indian Veterinary Practitioners’ Register and sets minimum standards for veterinary education.
- It regulates veterinary practice and education, advises Central and State Governments on veterinary matters, and handles the recognition of foreign veterinary qualifications.
Functions:
- The council conducts the All India Pre-Veterinary Test (AIPVT), implements and enforces standards and regulations, guides on professional ethics and conduct, and updates and maintains the register of practitioners.
