The US and Japan have recently strengthened their defence ties and issued a joint statement opposing any unilateral changes to the Senkaku Islands status quo by China.

- The Senkaku Islands, referred to as Tiaoyutai Islands in Taiwan and Diaoyu/Pinnacle Islands in China, are a group of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea. They are administered by Japan and situated near Okinawa Island (west), Taiwan (northeast), China (east), and the Ryukyu Islands (north), with Uotsuri Island being the largest.
