The Prime Minister recently laid the foundation stone for a new spaceport at Kulasekarapattinam, in Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu.
About the Kulasekarapattinam Spaceport:
- TheKulasekarapattinam Spaceport will be used to launch SSLVs (Small Satellite Launch Vehicles), including nano and micro satellites, while the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, will continue to launch heavier satellites like PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) and LMV3 (Launch Vehicle Mark-3).
- Its significance lies in its location, offering easy access to polar orbits, making launches more cost-effective for both private entities and ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation).
- A crucial geographic advantage is that there is no land between Kulasekarapattinam and Antarctica, essential for successful launches without flying over land before reaching orbit.
- Additionally, the Tamil Nadu government is planning to establish a Space Industrial Park and Propellants Park near Thoothukudi, aiming to alleviate supply chain issues for the spaceport.
