Naval Detachment Minicoy was recently commissioned into the Indian Navy as INS Jatayu, marking it as the second naval base in Lakshadweep following INS Dweeprakshak in Kavaratti.

- INS Jatayu is positioned approximately 500 kilometres away from Maldives and is poised for significant upgrades, including an airfield, enhanced housing, and personnel facilities.
- Its strategic importance lies in bolstering the Navy’s operational capabilities in anti-piracy and anti-narcotics operations in the western Arabian Sea.
- As the first responder in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), INS Jatayu will fortify India’s naval dominance in the western IOR, with the upcoming airfield set to augment surveillance capabilities against rising Chinese influence in the region.
