Union Cabinet approved the India AI Mission which aims to make India a frontrunner in AI innovation.

About India AI Mission:

  • The mission is encapsulated by the motto ‘Making AI in India’ and ‘Making AI Work for India,’ aiming to establish a robust AI ecosystem.
  • It will be spearheaded by the Independent Business Division (IBD) under the Digital India Corporation (DIC).

Key Components of the Mission:

  1. IndiaAI Compute Capacity: To build a scalable AI computing ecosystem supporting the burgeoning AI startups and research community.
  2. IndiaAI Innovation Centre: Focus on developing and deploying indigenous Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) and sector-specific foundational models.
  3. IndiaAI Datasets Platform: To provide streamlined access to quality non-personal datasets for AI innovation.
  4. IndiaAI Application Development Initiative: To foster AI applications in crucial sectors by tackling problem statements from various ministries and departments.
  5. IndiaAI FutureSkills: Aimed at removing barriers to AI education and incorporating AI courses at undergraduate, Masters, and Ph.D. levels.
  6. IndiaAI Startup Financing: To accelerate deep-tech AI startups by offering streamlined access to funding.
  7. Safe & Trusted AI: To ensure responsible AI projects through the development of indigenous tools and frameworks.

Implementation and Development:

  • A public-private partnership model will implement the AI mission, including the procurement of over 10,000 GPUs to support a high-end AI ecosystem.
  • A 50% viability gap funding approach will support the development of AI Compute Infrastructure with Rs 4,564 crore allocated for building computing infrastructure.
