Chad has successfully eliminated sleeping sickness, a Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD), becoming the first country in 2024 and the 51st globally to achieve this milestone.

About Sleeping Sickness:

  • It is the gambiense form of Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) caused by Trypanosoma parasites transmitted through tsetse flies.
  • Primarily affects sub-Saharan Africa and can be fatal if untreated.
  • Types:
  • Trypanosoma brucei gambiense: Accounts for 92% of cases.
  • Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense: Responsible for the remaining 8%.
  • Symptoms:
  • Stage 1: Fevers, headaches, itchiness, joint pains.
  • Stage 2: Insomnia, confusion, ataxia.
