Chad has successfully eliminated sleeping sickness, a Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD), becoming the first country in 2024 and the 51st globally to achieve this milestone.
About Sleeping Sickness:
- It is the gambiense form of Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) caused by Trypanosoma parasites transmitted through tsetse flies.
- Primarily affects sub-Saharan Africa and can be fatal if untreated.
- Types:
- Trypanosoma brucei gambiense: Accounts for 92% of cases.
- Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense: Responsible for the remaining 8%.
- Symptoms:
- Stage 1: Fevers, headaches, itchiness, joint pains.
- Stage 2: Insomnia, confusion, ataxia.
