The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has released the 25th edition of the “Women and Men in India 2023” report.
Key Findings of the Report:
- Population Projections: India’s population is expected to reach 152.2 crores by 2036, with the female percentage increasing to 48.8% from 48.5% in 2011. The sex ratio is anticipated to improve from 943 females per 1000 males in 2011 to 952 females per 1000 males by 2036.
- Age Demography: The percentage of individuals under 15 years is projected to decrease, while the population aged 60 years and above is expected to rise significantly by 2036.
- Fertility Trends: The Age Specific Fertility Rate (ASFR) for women aged 20-29 has declined between 2016 and 2020. Notably, the ASFR for women aged 35-39 has slightly increased, indicating a trend towards family expansion later in life.
- Maternal and Infant Health: Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) has dropped to 97 per lakh live births during 2018-20, nearing the SDG target of reducing MMR to 70 by 2030. Both male and female Infant Mortality Rates (IMR) were equal at 28 per 1000 live births in 2020.
- Labour Force Participation: Male Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) increased from 75.8% to 78.5% between 2017-18 and 2022-23. Female LFPR saw a significant rise from 23.3% to 37% during the same period.
- Voter Participation: Women’s voter turnout in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections reached 67.2%, surpassing that of men for the first time.
- Women Entrepreneurship: Women lead 47.6% of the total recognized start-ups in India, with 55,816 out of 1,17,254 start-ups recognized by DPIIT between 2016 and 2023 being women-led.
- Health Improvements: Life expectancy is projected to rise to 71.2 years for males and 74.7 years for females by 2031-36. Non-institutional deliveries have reduced to 8.2% during 2019-21.
