EU Nature Restoration Law recently came into effect.

About EU Nature Restoration Law:

  • It sets binding targets for restoring degraded ecosystems across the EU, with the goal of achieving biodiversity restoration, climate neutrality, and food security by 2050.

Objectives:

  • Restore EU’s Biodiversity: Reverse biodiversity loss and ensure sustainable ecosystems.
  • Climate Neutrality by 2050: Mitigate climate change by restoring carbon-storing ecosystems.
  • Food and Water Security: Enhance food security and water sustainability across Europe.

Targets and Measures:

  • 2026 Deadline: Member States to submit National Restoration Plans by 1 September 2026.
  • Restoration of Ecosystems:
    • 20% of degraded land and sea ecosystems restored by 2030.
    • Restoration measures for all degraded ecosystems to be implemented by 2050.
    • 30% of terrestrial, coastal, freshwater, peatlands, and marine ecosystems to be restored by 2030.
    • 25,000 km of rivers to be restored to free-flowing status.
    • 3 billion additional trees to be planted by 2030.

Key Ecosystems and Areas of Focus:

  • Forest Ecosystems: Restore forest habitats and peatlands.
  • Agricultural Ecosystems: Halt pollinator decline and enhance biodiversity.
  • Marine Ecosystems: Restoration of marine habitats and connectivity of rivers and floodplains.
  • Urban Ecosystems: Increase urban green space and tree canopy cover by 2030.

Implementation:

  • National Restoration Plans:
    • Each Member State has to prepare a plan that outlines restoration needs and actions based on national circumstances.
    • Plans must be submitted to the European Commission, reviewed regularly, and open to public participation.
  • Reporting & Monitoring:
    • European Environment Agency will provide regular technical reports on progress.
    • Plans to be reviewed and updated in 2032 and 2042.

Financial Support:

  • EU Funding: Member States to mobilize funds from EU programs such as:
    • Common Agricultural Policy (CAP)
    • LIFE Programme
    • Horizon Europe (EU research fund)
    • European Maritime, Fisheries, and Aquaculture Fund
