- The railway stretches 45.88 km from Mettupalaiyam to Ooty, crossing through the Coimbatore and Nilgiri districts of Tamil Nadu.
- The idea of constructing a mountain railway from Mettupalaiyam to the Nilgiri Hills was first proposed in 1854, and completed after 45 years in 1899.
- Initially operated by the Madras Railway under a government agreement, it was later managed by the South Indian Railway Company after their purchase.
- In 1908, the line was extended from Coonoor to Ootacamund (Ooty).
- The track uses 50 lb rails, 250 bridges and 16 tunnels between Kallar and Ooty, with the track laid down with stone ballast.
