The African Union recently became a full member of the G-20.

About African Union (AU):

  • AU is a continental body consisting of the 55 member states that make up the countries of the African Continent.
  • It was officially launched in 2002 as a successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU, 1963-1999).
  • The AU was announced in the Sirte Declaration in Sirte, Libya, in 1999.
  • The bloc was founded in 2001 in Addis AbabaEthiopia, and launched in 2002 in Durban, South Africa.
  • The AU’s secretariat, the African Union Commission, is based in Addis Ababa.
  • The highest decision-making organ is the Assembly of the African Union, made up of all the heads of state or government of member states of the AU.
