  • Arun Chandra Guha was an Indian politician born on May 14, 1892, in Barisal, then part of the Bengal Presidency and now in Bangladesh.

Political Involvement:

  • Guha began his political journey during the Swadeshi movement in 1905.
  • He became a member of the Jugantar Party, a secret revolutionary society, in 1906.
  • He was arrested multiple times between 1916 and 1946, totalling about 24 years in detention due to his revolutionary activities.

Publishing and Literature:

  • Operated the ‘Saraswati Library’ publishing house and published journals such as ‘Swadhinta’, ‘Mandira’, and ‘Forward’.
    • The journal ‘Swadhinta’ was banned in 1930.
  • Authored influential works including “Shristi Sabhyata” and “First Spark of Revolution”.

Role in India’s Independence Movement:

  • Played a significant role in the non-cooperation movement starting in 1920.
  • Served as the General Secretary of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee and was a member of the All-India Congress Committee for 26 years.
  • His advocacy focused on mass-based revolutionary movements and a strong village panchayat system.

Constitutional Contributions:

  • He was elected to the Constituent Assembly in 1946, where he participated in drafting the Indian Constitution and advocated against restrictions on rights and freedoms.

  • He served as a Member of Parliament until the third Lok Sabha (1963), representing Barasat, West Bengal.
  • He held the position of Minister of State for Finance and was Chairman of the Estimates Committee (1965-66).
