About Avian Influenza (Bird Flu):
- Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, is an infectious viral disease that primarily affects birds but can also infect mammals, including humans.
- Causative Agent: Caused by influenza Type A viruses, with subtypes H5N1 and H7N9 being the most well-known.
- Transmission: Spreads through direct contact with infected birds, their secretions, or contaminated environments. Human infections are rare but possible through close contact with infected birds or contaminated surfaces.
- Symptoms in Birds: Ranges from mild to severe, including respiratory distress, decreased egg production, and high mortality rates in severe cases.
- Symptoms in Humans: Can range from mild respiratory symptoms to severe illness, including pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
