The BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) charter recently came into force after all member states completed its ratification.
About BIMSTEC charter:
- The charter is a foundational document outlining the goals, principles, and structure of BIMSTEC.
- It was signed and adopted during the 5th summit of BIMSTEC in Sri Lanka, in 2022.
- It provides legal recognition to the grouping, enabling structured diplomatic dialogue with other groupings and countries, and allows for the admission of observers and new members.
About BIMSTEC
- BIMSTEC is a multilateral regional organization of countries dependent on the Bay of Bengal, aiming to accelerate economic development, cooperation, and maintain peace and stability in the region.
- Members: Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Nepal, and Bhutan.
- Established in 1997 with the signing of the Bangkok Declaration.
- Secretariat: Dhaka, Bangladesh.
