The Union Cabinet recently approved modifications to the National Livestock Mission (NLM), aimed at bolstering livestock-related entrepreneurship and conservation efforts.
About the recent modification to National Livestock Mission (NLM):
Expansion of Activities:
Entrepreneurship Development:
- Capital subsidy of 50%, up to 50 lakhs, will be provided for the establishment of ventures related to horse, donkey, mule, and camel.
- Assistance will be extended to individuals, groups like FPOs, SHGs, JLGs, and various corporate entities.
- State governments to receive support for breed conservation efforts of these animals.
Fodder Seed Processing Infrastructure:
- Capital subsidy of 50% up to Rs. 50 lakhs, will be offered for setting up infrastructure for fodder seed processing.
- Assistance will be available to private companies, startups, and various farmer groups for construction and establishment of necessary facilities.
Fodder Cultivation Expansion:
- Support will be provided to state governments for increasing fodder cultivation in various types of lands, including non-forest, waste, and degraded forest lands.
- It aims to enhance fodder availability across the country.
Simplification of Livestock Insurance:
- Simplification of the Livestock Insurance program, by reducing beneficiary premium share to 15%.
- The remaining premium amount to be shared between the Centre and the State at 60:40 ratio.
- Increase in the number of animals covered under insurance to 10 cattle units for cattle, sheep, and goat.

- The NLM initiated in 2014-15 with the emphasis on entrepreneurship development, research, livestock insurance, breed improvement, feed & fodder, and innovation & extension.
- It has 4 Sub-Missions and 50 activities.
- It realigns with the 2021-22 under the Development Programme with an outlay of Rs. 2300 crore.
- It comprises of 3 Sub-Missions- Breed improvement of Livestock and Poultry; Feed & Fodder; Innovation and Extension.
