The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has recently issued a notice to the Odisha government seeking an explanation regarding the custodial death.
Custodial death:
- Custodial death refers to the death of an individual during pre-trial or after conviction, caused directly or indirectly by police actions while in their custody.
- Such deaths can occur in various locations, including jails, medical or private premises, or during transport in police or other vehicles.
Types of Custodial Deaths:
- Death occurred in police custody.
- Death occurred in judicial custody.
- Death occurred in the custody of the army or paramilitary forces.
Status of Custodial Deaths in India:
- Between 2020 and 2022, India recorded over 4,400 custodial deaths.
- According to the National Crime Records Bureau, Gujarat reported the highest number of custodial deaths with 80, followed by Maharashtra.
