About the DAT-SG:

  • The DAT-SG is second version of DAT that aims to enhance the safety of fishermen at sea by leveraging satellite technology to improve emergency communication and coordination.
  • ISRO has evolved DAT into the Second-Generation DAT (DAT-SG) by harnessing technological advancements in satellite communication and navigation based on NavIC module.
  • It can be connected to mobile phones through Bluetooth and hence messages can be easily read in the native language using a dedicated app on mobile devices.
  •  The services of DAT-SG will remain operational on a 24 x 7 basis.

History:

  • The first version of DAT was introduced in 2010.
  • DAT had enabled fishermen to send distress signals via communication satellites to the Indian Mission Control Centre (INMCC).
  • INMCC decoded the alert signals to identify the location and identity of the distressed fishing boat.
  • Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres (MRCCs) under the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) were then notified to initiate search and rescue operations.

Mechanism:

  • DAT-SG allows fishermen to receive acknowledgments when they activate distress alerts.
    • This provides reassurance to fishermen that help is on the way, enhancing their confidence during emergencies.
  • DAT-SG can also receive messages from control centers, enabling the transmission of advance alerts about adverse weather conditions, cyclones, tsunamis, or other emergencies.
    • The earlier version established only one-way communication.
    • Fishermen can then make informed decisions, either returning to safety or seeking shelter.
  • DAT-SG also provides valuable information about potential fishing zones to the fishermen at regular intervals.
    • This data may help fishermen optimize their catch, save time, and conserve fuel.

Central Control Center “Sagarmitra”:

  • INMCC utilizes a web-based network management system called Sagarmitra, which maintains a database of registered DAT-SG devices.
  • This database aids MRCCs in accessing real-time information about distressed boats, facilitating quicker response times.

About Distress Alert Transmitter (DAT):

  • The DAT is an INSAT (Indian National Satellite) based battery operated transmitter which in case of emergency can transmit an emergency message.
  • It is developed for “NAVIKA’ community
