The Muria tribes practice the deda method to preserve seeds of pulses and food crops which were handed over to them by their ancestors in Chhattisgarh.
About Deda Method:
- Deda is an ancestral method of preserving seeds using natural materials.
- Seeds are wrapped in leaves and packed almost airtight to resemble boulders.
- The packing involves three layers:
- The first layer consists of wood ash spread inside Siali leaves (Bauhinia vahlii), locally known as ‘addakulu’.
- The second layer uses lemon leaves to form a casing.
- Finally, the seeds are placed inside this casing and sealed.
- This method is specifically effective in preserving seeds of pulses such as green gram, red gram, black gram, and beans.
- Benefits: Offers protection from pests and worms, and allows seeds to be stored and used for cultivation for up to five years.
