Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways stated that given the geopolitical situation in the Red Sea and Suez Canal, the Eastern Maritime Corridor (EMC) could be an effective alternative for India.
About Eastern Maritime Corridor (EMC):
- The EMC is set to connect Chennai, a major cultural and economic hub in India, with Vladivostok, Russia’s key port city in the Far East.
- This initiative is poised to significantly cut down transportation times, reducing the journey from 40+ days to a mere 24 days.
- Traditionally, the route from Mumbai to St. Petersburg spans approximately 8,675 nautical miles.
- In contrast, the EMC will cover around 5,600 nautical miles, offering a shorter and more direct path to the Far East markets, including China and Japan.
