The Spices Board of India has recently mandated testing for Ethylene Oxide (ETO) for all spices exported to Hong Kong and Singapore.
About the Ethylene Oxide (ETO):
- It is a colorless, flammable, and explosive gas at room temperature.
- ETO is utilized as a surface disinfectant and fumigant, used to sterilize critical items and to inhibit the growth of microorganisms like E. Coli and Salmonella in food products.
- It is classified as a carcinogen when used in food.
