The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to host its largest multilateral exercise Tarang Shakti, in two phases during August and September.

About Exercise Tarang Shakti:

  • The exercise aims to foster interoperability, share best practices, showcase the indigenous defense industry, and build mutual trust without focusing on any particular nation or theme.
  • Eighteen countries will participate, with ten contributing air assets and a total of 150 aircraft, including both foreign and Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft, will be involved.
  • The exercise is divided into two phases:
  • Phase-1: at Sulur, Tamil Nadu, featuring 32 foreign aircraft, and Germany, France, Spain, and the U.K. will participate.
  • Phase-2: at Jodhpur, with 27 fighters, refueling aircrafts, airborne early warning aircraft, and C-130 Special Forces aircraft from Australia, Bangladesh, Greece, Singapore, the U.A.E. and U.S.
  • A defence industrial exposition will be held at Sulur and Jodhpur, featuring 68 participants, including defense public sector undertakings, private firms, and start-ups.
  • The exposition aims to showcase India’s indigenous defense ecosystem and commitment to Atmanirbharta (self-reliance).
  • The IAF will field over 40 aircraft in each phase, including all indigenous platforms such as the Light Combat Aircraft, Advanced Light Helicopter, and Light Combat Helicopter.
  • The Indian Navy will participate in Phase-1 with its MiG-29K carrier-borne fighters.
  • Germany will deploy fighter jets and an A400M transport aircraft, which is also a contender in India’s Medium Transport Aircraft tender.
  • The exercise will include cultural exchanges and aims to strengthen cultural and diplomatic relations among participating nations.
  • Since 2001, the IAF has participated in 91 international air exercises, 32 of which were hosted by the IAF.
