The Madhya Pradesh government has finalized preparations for the reintroduction of cheetahs at Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary, establishing it as the second habitat for cheetahs after Kuno National Park. This translocation is part of Project Cheetah.
About Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary:
- Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary is located on the borders of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, and is characterized by the drainage area of the Chambal River and the Gandhisagar dam.
- The sanctuary features a dry, mixed deciduous forest known as Khathiar-Gir with flat grasslands.
- The flora of the sanctuary includes species such as Khair, Salai, Kardhai, Dhawda, Tendu, Palash, and Arjuna.
- Among the diverse fauna present are Chinkara, Nilgai, Sambar, Indian leopard, langur, Indian wild dog, peacock, otter, and Mugger crocodile.
